When age sets in, there are several ways to regenerate the physiological processes to retard the aging process. This is true for all living beings, plants, animals, and humans. Just as a lawn starts looking fresh and green again after a simple procedure of aerating the ground it grows on, doctors have now found a way to regenerate your skin by using a handheld device that increases collagen synthesis (a basic building block of skin). By running minute steel prongs over the face and/or body the penetration of appropriate substances that keep it healthy, can be increased. This procedure, termed needling, is also referred to as percutaneous collagen induction.
Why it is done: The skin is pricked with small needles to
- Minimize scars that appear on the skin as an aftermath of a surgery, acne, or those that stand out prominently on the skin
- Help maintain normal pigment synthesis
- Decrease wrinkles, remove lines caused by aging and firm up loose skin

What happens during skin needling?
Soon after the skin is pricked the punctured area will show some bleeding that will later heal. At the same time, the following changes occur beneath the layer of the punctured skin
- The fibroblasts will move to where the injury has occurred. Fibroblasts are cells that help synthesize connective tissue, extracellular matrix (ECM), and collagen. They are found in bulk all over the body and are significant during healing an injury
- The matrix will start re-organizing itself
- After reaching the injury site, the fibroblast will place a new ECM there. ECM provides structural support to cells
- Several needle pricks will ensure that the repair it triggers off will take place uniformly in a seemingly homogenous layer, below the epidermal layer

What does collagen do?
- Repair the scar tissue
- Synthesize and organize new pigmentation
- Fill up the deep lines and scars on the skin to make it appear smooth as before
- With time, there is a shortening of the collagen due to which the skin seems to appear stretched
- After about 12 months, the now sufficient layer of collagen helps create (1)a correctly functioning elastin (a protein in the connective tissue that enables the skin to have a certain elasticity, so that it can return to normal shape after stretching) and (2)proper blood flow in the region of injury
Improvements in the skin after needling
- Scars and acne will be less visible and the skin appears smooth, tighter, and flawless
- Sensitivity of the skin will improve
- The right kind of pigmentation will darken or lighten skin color as is required

Advantages of skin needling
- There is no damage to outer skin unlike a laser treatment
- Skin does not peel
- There are no procedures involved during the one year of healing once the initial needle pricks have been accomplished
- The skin’s normal physiological reaction after needling will help create a healthy firm and smooth skin on the sight of the scar or injury

Precautions
- Use of sterile and the right type of needles, other equipments are essential for the success of the procedure
- Keep away from the sun until the initial redness lessens and slight bleeding stops; this could be for about five days
- Follow a healthy diet plan that includes a lot of fruits and vegetables. You may need extra supplementation of Vitamin C. Avoid smoking and alcohol
- The healing would be stretched over 12 months. You need to be patient rather than opting for dubious procedures that claim to get it done sooner
