Lifestyle in Ayurveda means the “Din Charya” practices or the Daily Routine activities leading to a healthy life. Ayurveda recommends the following regimen which is Din Charya to prevent the diseases and also to promote the good physical and the mental health. According to Ayurveda two cycles of change happen in the human body every day. They are responsible for the Vata, Pitta, or Kapha balance and any disturbance in the balance result in diseases. According to the cycles of vata, pitta and kapha the daily routine should be divided into morning, noon, evening, dinner and bedtime.

As recommended by Ayuveda, Lifestyle (Din charya) means the following routine activities: 

  • Brahma muhurat
  • Sharir chinta nivartanam
  • Mala mutra utsarjanam
  • Muktha dhavanam
  • Nasya
  • Gandhusa, kaval Dharnam
  • Dhumapanam
  • Madananam
  • Vyayam

Let us see take a close look at Din Charya (Lifestyle) in detail 

  • Brahma muharat says one must get up very early in the morning. Getting up 2-3 hours early before the sun rise is ideal. Early morning in ayurveda is Vatha dominating period. Ayurveda recommends ways to regulate Vata Dosha in the body.
  • Vata Dosha is very useful in the physical movement of the body and it promotes the functionalities of the inner and external systems. This helps in easy movement of bowels that is very important for maintaining the body toxin free.
  • Once the excretion is over, one should wash the body parts such as hands, legs, eyes and nose. Ayurveda insists on the cleanliness of the entire body.
  • The regular activities also include cleaning the teeth. Ayurveda recommends the use of neem, ark, nyagrodh or madhuk for brushing. It also says it should be done slowly as it gives enough time to kill the germs. Tongue cleaning is also emphasized to get rid of the bad breath. You can avoid white and yellow deposits on your tongue. Oral hygiene is an important aspect of Din Charya.
  • One of the regular exercises for the body is to fill the mouth with water and wash your mouth. This activity improves the gum strength and taste sensation to a great extent. The other benefit of this exercise is that your voice becomes sweat and clear.

  • Ayurveda recommends Nasya to enhance the activity of the sense organs.  This also retards the aging process.
  • The other routine activity in din charya is the massage. One should do the massage in the body parts using till oil, coconut oil or mustard oil etc. Coconut oil is recommended for the pitta body constitution. Whole body massage helps in purifying the body and makes it strong.
  • After massage one should do the physical exercise, which makes the body so active for the rest of the day. Exercise strengthens the body and helps in shedding weight.
  • Ayurveda recommends daily bath in lukewarm water. It lends freshness and lightness to the body. It also helps the body to feel better and healthy.
  • The routine is completed for the day by doing mediation after bath. Meditation calms the mind and provides clarity to thoughts. Meditation improves concentration and mental ability.
