Although this drink has been around for more than 4000 years, its properties have only been extensively studied in the last fifteen years. Green tea differs from other varieties of tea in that it is dried quickly in the sun and there is no fermentation process, as opposed to the process involved in producing black tea. In this way, a nutrient called catechin present in all varieties of tea is preserved intact. It is these catechins that help prevent cancer by increasing the body’s production of anti-toxic enzymes. Studies have shown a reduction in the development of colon, pancreatic, and stomach cancer in people who drink green tea daily.

Green tea also contains polyphenols, substances of strong antioxidant properties. It is these polyphenols that, together with other substances present in the body, increase oxidation levels and allow the body to burn excess fat more proficiently. It also helps reduce LDL cholesterol (the “bad” kind of cholesterol), it has anti-inflammatory properties which allow the heart to function correctly and also helps get clear skin.

Another good thing about green tea is that it can easily be added to your slimming diet. There are many ways in which you can start doing so. Some people recommend drinking a cup of unsweetened green tea first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, so that your body can take full advantage of its properties, and another one at night before going to sleep. Other diets suggest replacing your morning and afternoon cup of coffee with a cup of green tea. Another suggestion is to drink a cup of green tea with lunch and another with dinner.
