Ovulation disorders account for nearly twenty-five percent of female infertility factors. Medication is the first suggested line of treatment for women suffering from ovulation disorders. Fertility drugs are found to be highly effective and they boost your ovulation up to eighty percent. It does its work by influencing ovulation through the means of medication. However not all of the fertility drugs available in the market are meant for the purpose of strengthening or triggering the ovulation mechanism, certain fertility drugs are also meant for the purpose of suppressing the ovulation mechanism. A detailed medical examination and investigation are very important steps in deciding or recommending the use of fertility drugs. Very few fertility drugs are available to boost up the fertility factor in men as well.
Fertility drugs are considered to be a means of primary medication for women suffering from ovulation disorders. Mainly two types of fertility drugs are available, those taken orally and those that are injected. Usually, fertility drugs are used for the purpose of treating those women suffering from recurrent miscarriages or having ovulation disorders. However, in rare cases, it is also used in some cases where the problem is associated with a male partner. In such cases, generally in vitro fertilization technique is used. And fertility drugs are used to increase the count of eggs produced by women to be used for in vitro fertilization. This may lead to multiple births.
Types of Fertility Drugs:
- Clomid or Serophene: Clomid is generally the first choice of the doctors while treating infertility with the help of fertility drugs. This is because it is the most effective fertility drug and it is being used by doctors for as long as twenty-five years. Its original name is Clomiphene citrate. This drug is generally used in those cases where the female partner is having ovulation disorders. It is an anti-estrogen drug so it causes the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus which are situated deep inside the brain to secrete such hormones that are helpful in stimulating the ovaries to produce eggs. So these fertility drugs cause LH and FSH to be released by the pituitary gland and GnRH to be released by the hypothalamus.
- Femera: Femera, also famous by the name of letrozole is not actually a fertility drug but is used in the treatment of women suffering from postmenopausal breast cancer. But it has been proved to be as effective as Clomid in stimulating ovaries to produce eggs. In spite of its effectiveness in inducing ovulation, it is used less frequently. This is because of the fact that it is found to be risky for the embryo’s health when taken during pregnancy and babies born are more susceptible to have birth defects. Doctors treating their patients with femera argue that this should not be taken during pregnancy but only before it. The use of this medication, therefore, needs strict medical supervision.
- Follistim or Gonal-F: FSH is one of those hormones that are required to be present in the body if you are trying to conceive since it instructs oocytes in the ovaries to mature and to grow. The Follistim drug works by imitating this important hormone inside the body. A recombinant DNA technology is used in the lab to create them. It is generally injected inside the body and may be used during in vitro fertilization technique as well.
