Building Resilience And Self-Discipline In Children

Resilience is one of the important components that let you achieve personal and professional goals. Parents can follow a few strategies and help their children develop resilience and self-discipline. Resilience is the ability to stay tough and recover from adversity without giving up hope and confidence. Children deal with different emotions at an early stage of development and can be taught how to stay strong, focused, and self-disciplined. It helps them develop emotional independence at an early age and they are able to grow into better individuals achieving goals in their lives.

Developing Adaptability

There are many steps to achieve resilience. Children must learn to adapt to circumstances and make the best out of every situation. This gives them insights and guidance to deal with stress and other negative situations with a neutral and positive approach. When children are taught to adapt, they learn to adjust and be content with what they have and focus on their goals better. They complain less and learn to be more responsive than reactive. They will not make unreasonable demands and behave within reason.

Compromising Behaviours

Lack of resilience leads to attitude as well as behavioral problems in children. Parents have to watch their children at every stage and help them develop compromising behaviour without curbing their freedom and independent thinking. Be the best support and help them keep their strength through adversities. It not only helps them be better individuals but also develops them spiritually, mentally, and emotionally. They develop healthy psychology and attitude towards any problems or situations in life and do not crib or whine.

Build Social Support

Help them build their network and encourage them to be friendly at an early stage. It develops their communication skills and helps them in building an acceptable social behaviour. It helps them build social confidence and have a better relationship with everyone. Help your children understand their strengths and focus on them. It builds a healthy competitive approach where the focus is to build themselves instead of comparing themselves with others.

Demonstrate Their Behaviour

As a parent, it is your responsibility to demonstrate the behaviour of your child and correct them. Being too strict or too lenient does not help in disciplining the child. A way to discipline the child and make them understand the consequences of their bad behaviour and attitude is to demonstrate their behaviours and help them understand how it affects them as well as others. It also helps you avoid stereotypes, and makes them caring and compassionate people. You can help them develop a respectful approach towards people and community. Avoid conversations that have hate, spite, and negative emotions. This keeps their behaviour positive and helps them differentiate between healthy and unhealthy attitudes.

Self-Control

One of the most important life lessons to learn at an early stage is learning to control your emotions. Lack of self-control leads to many emotional and behavioural problems. Children must be taught to control their emotions in a healthy way and express themselves assertively without being dramatic or stoical. Self-control does not curb emotions, but puts a leash on negative emotions and regulates them in a better way. It lays the foundations of developing coping mechanisms and boosts physical as well as mental health. Negative emotions affect the immune system and can be hazardous to health if left unchecked. Children must be taught how to balance their emotions even in negative situations and adversities.

Addressing Conflicts

As a family, address conflicts openly and let children have a say in whatever they have to. You must let go of your rigidity and have a flexible approach to the resolution of conflicts in any situation. Create a safe nest for children to express their fears, doubts, dissatisfaction, or any emotion and help them develop a clear perspective on any issue. Children learn from you how to address conflicts and deal with difficult situations. It becomes your responsibility to be an example they can follow because children subconsciously imitate the behaviour and approach of their parents.

Build The Best Routine

Establish a daily routine that they get used to and follow lifelong. It instils self-discipline in their life and they will not get into a bizarre or a random routine which can affect their normal functioning. Teaching them to wake up early in the morning and helping them develop good habits goes a long way in making them live a fulfilled and content life. Help them develop mindfulness which curbs their erratic and impulsive behaviours and creates a balanced and healthy life. Make exercise and fun activities a part of the routine.
