Gastritis is a physical condition characterized by cramping and severe pain in the upper abdomen. Gastritis affects the lining of the stomach and is symptomatic of an underlying problem. Gastritis, also known as dyspepsia can be triggered as a reaction to medicines, by food allergies or it may be the earliest symptoms of peptic ulcers.

Foods to be avoided in gastritis

Tea, coffee, spicy food, meat, fried condiments, pickles, alcohol, and tobacco should be strictly avoided. Broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and tomatoes should be avoided in the diet as they are known to have gas-producing properties.

A person suffering from gastritis should consume foods that are easily digestible. 8-12 glasses of water are absolutely essential to maintain balance in the stomach acids. The patient can be served big helpings of juicy fruits. Citrus fruits should be avoided as the acid content in the fruit can further irritate the stomach lining with more acidic juices.

A person suffering from gastritis should ensure never to skip breakfast. Further, food should be chewed well before being swallowed. Instead of eating 2-3 big meals, the person should ensure to split daily meals into 5-6 small meals. This reduces pressure on the digestive system and does not allow acid to form in the stomach as it leads to gas formation in the stomach.

In case of gastritis, the following diet should be followed for 3-4 days to cleanse the system.

Breakfast: A glass of carrot- beet juice or spinach juice. 2-3 slices of dry whole-grain toast and a bowl of steamed vegetables should be eaten. This should be varied with a bowl of oats and warm milk.

Mid-morning:

A glass of Luke warm milk with banana slices or banana- yogurt smoothed.

Lunch:

2 slices of dry toast, a bowl of vegetable soup, and a bowl of steamed or pureed vegetables with brown rice. A bowl of fresh fruit and yogurt can add fiber and other nutrients. A bowl of cooked cereals should be included for protein.

Snack: 2 dry biscuits with a glass of milk, a bowl of fruit, or yogurt made with skimmed milk.

Dinner: 2 slices of dry whole-grain toast, a bowl of salad, a bowl of sprouted legumes, a glass of vegetable juice, and a bowl of yogurt. To add fiber to the diet, a bowl of cooked oats should be added.
