Skin Types in Ayurveda

Vata’s type of skin is radiant and soft. Vata aggravation can cause the skin to become dry, flaky, and lined. Vata-type skin has smaller pores than other skin types.  The discoloration wrinkles and darkening of skin mostly occur around the eyes, ears, and forehead.   The application of oils is beneficial for Vata skin.

A Pitta type of skin is healthy, rosy, and glowing.    Exposure to hot sunlight makes it bloodshot. The areas such as the nose, back of the neck, and scalp are pitta areas. Pitta-type skin is prone to acne, pimples, and lesions.

The Kapha skin is oily and smooth and does not wrinkle. Aggravation of kapha can cause acne that leaves permanent scars on the skin. The Kapha areas are the neck and chin. This type of skin has a higher risk of edema than the other skin types. Dry cleansing medications are useful in treating oily kapha skin. Cleansers and toners containing Aloe Vera, lotus petals, rose petals and sage leaf are good for kapha skin.
