Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is the inflammation of the lining of joints or lining of internal organs. It may be chronic or can occur intermittently. Rheumatoid arthritis is named Aamvata in Ayurveda. The description of Aamvata is found in the Ayurvedic literature which is over 5000 years old. It is caused by the ‘Aam’ that means”improperly digested foods.” The term Aam means an item that is not ripened, cooked, or digested properly. Causes of Rheumatoid Arthritis

According to Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune disease. Some people may inherit the disease. The causes of Rheumatoid Arthritis are explained elaborately in Ayurvedic texts. The vitiated vata dosha causes the Ama to travel through the Kapha-dominated places of the body like the stomach, joints, chest, brain, etc. The vital channels that nourish the body are blocked due to the imbalance of doshas. It results in a reduced supply of nutrients to the cells and body tissues and the lining of joints gets inflamed.  This leads to decreased immunity and the person becomes weak.

The main cause is the formation of Ama which results from improper lifestyles, lack of exercise, and imbalance of doshas caused by indigestion and over physical exertion. Ayurveda believes that the reduced ability of the digestive and metabolic fire to digest and assimilate foods leads to Rheumatoid Arthritis. The weakness of digestive fire is caused by habits like

  • Overeating.
  • Excessive drinking of water
  • Eating before the digestion of the meal is taken earlier.
