Pyorrhea is a disease of the gums. It is one of the most common periodontal diseases. The disease affects the membrane covering the roots of the teeth causing the teeth to loosen. Pyorrhea is the main cause of tooth loss in adults. If left untreated, the patient may swallow the pus which can lead to gastrointestinal disorders and other diseases and ultimately premature aging.

Ayurveda for Pyorrhea
In Ayurveda ‘Pyorrhea’ is given the names Putidanta or Dantaveshta. It is typically identified by excessive discharges of pus from the gums or roots of the teeth. Pyorrhea is of many different types, each one is distinct according to the exact part of the gums or teeth where pus oozes out. When bacteria accumulate in the plaque it produces toxins and causes inflammation of the gums. Gums start bleeding and become tender. When the immune system is weak the bacterial activity increases.

Symptoms of Pyorrhea
The common symptoms of pyorrhea are many. These are, foul smell in the mouth; teeth become loose and start falling one after another, gum paining and bleeding. Some symptoms like indigestion and constipation can also be the causes of pyorrhea. Gums may become swollen and tender when the condition advances and when pressed pus comes out along the borders of the teeth.

Causes of Pyorrhea
- Infection of the gums
- Constipation and indigestion
- Poor oral hygiene
- Wrong brushing
- Improper use of toothpicks
- Chemical irritants inside the mouth

Ayurvedic Treatment of Pyorrhea
- Ayurveda has very effective treatments like the oil of clove (Lavang Tel) and Irimedadi Thaila.
- Dashana Samskara Churna is s well-known medicine for pyorrhea. This is a powder that controls the bleeding of the gums and also pus formation in the gums. It also removes the foul smell of the mouth effectively. This should be used even after the symptoms of pyorrhea have vanished. This can also be used as a regular tooth powder.
- A soft brush should be used along with this powder. Gums should be cleaned using a mixture of this powder and water using the tip of the index finger.
- Babula and Bakula Bark Powder: The dried bark of these trees are made into powder and used as tooth powder as they have antiseptic properties. They do not cause any side effects and protect the teeth and gums from infections.

- During treatment, the patient should take only boiled vegetables without spices, take fruit juices and fruits. Alcohol, coffee, sauces, strong tea, and tinned food must be avoided.
- Avoid constipation. A hot bath with Epsom salt is recommended. Breathing exercises also help.
- Prevention
- Proper and regular brushing of the teeth using soft brushes twice daily is a must. Drinking plenty of water helps in keeping the system clean and getting rid of toxins. Consume lots of Amalaki (Indian gooseberry), pomegranate, and guava, fruits that have plenty of vitamin C.
- Vegetables with a bitter taste like bitter gourd, drumstick, paruwal and patola are beneficial. Avoid foods that stick to the teeth and gums.
- Gargle after eating every time to avoid food particles sticking to the teeth.
- Fresh prop root of banyan tree can be used to brush teeth.
