Ayurvedic Cure For Prickly Heat

Prickly Heat is a form of skin rash. It affects most parts of the body due to excessive sweating in hot and humid climates or over-exposure to heat.  When the sweat ducts and the hair follicles get blocked the skin becomes vulnerable to prickly heat. The ducts get inflamed and are responsible for the pricking sensation in the skin. The other reasons may be an unhealthy lifestyle and wearing clothes that do not absorb sweat causing skin damage.

Ayurveda For Prickly Heat

In Ayurveda, prickly heat is known as ‘Pidaka’. Ayurveda relates this disorder to the pitta dosha of the body. The treatment is based on the patient’s condition and the severity of the problem and is individualized. Herbal medicines, diet and lifestyle modifications, and other recommendations are prescribed.

Causes of Prickly Heat

Prickly heat arises from the plugging of sweat ducts and hair follicles on the skin. These give rise to sweat which is a very potent skin irritant because of its high salt content. The following are the causes of Prickly heat

  • Clogging of sweat pores by application of talcum powder or creams
  • Unhygienic Lifestyle (not bathing regularly and properly)
  • Wearing clothes which are nonabsorbent and prevent evaporation of sweat

Symptoms of Prickly Heat

Prickly heat affects almost every part of the body. The parts most affected are the folds of the skin, such as his neck, armpits, and groin. Prickly heat causes rashes which turn the sweat duct red and inflamed and may cause a ‘prickling’ or stinging sensation. The following symptoms are common during this ailment:

  • Excessive sweating
  • Itching
  • Discomfort due to a burning sensation caused by rashes
  • Bacterial infections
  • Clusters of red bumps
  • Tiny eruptions (akin to sand grains) will appear in the affected areas

Ayurvedic Treatment to Prickly Heat

Ayurveda prescribes that people with the Paittika type of physical build are very susceptible to this condition. Such people are advised to stay away from humidity and heat. The following remedies are prescribed

  • Take herb Pravala pishti should be given to the patient. It needs to be consumed with honey two times a day
  • Abhyanga therapy involves taking oil massage with coconut oil 2 times a day

Diet Precautions For prickly heat

  • To avoid prickly heat, the following care needs to be taken in the diet during hot and humid climates:
  • Take at least 10 liters of water daily
  • Juicy fruits like grapes and watermelon should be taken regularly
  • Plenty of buttermilk should be consumed.
  • Mix Coriander powder in water and take at least 50 ml daily

Other Precautions For Prickly Heat

  • Ointments, including moisturizers, or oil-based products should be avoided during humid climate conditions. These ointments can block the sweat ducts
  • Loose-fitting clothing should be preferred which prevents overheating of the body and can also absorb sweat and allow air circulation
  • Avoiding excessive heat and humidity wherever possible
