Ayurvedic Cure For Parkinson Disease

Parkinson’s disease is a neurological disorder characterized by muscle rigidity affecting body movement, posture, and speech. Parkinson’s disease is degenerative and affects the nervous system. The other name for Parkinson’s disease is Paralysis agitans. More men are victims of this disease than women. This disorder is common in the elderly population and is characterized by stiffness, tremor, slowness of movement, and impaired balance and coordination.

The symptoms may persist and become worse if it persists over a long time. There are many treatment options such as medication and surgery Parkinson’s disease and its symptoms can be managed through treatment and medication or surgery though the complete cure is not possible.

Ayurveda Perspective of Parkinson’s disease

Generally, it considers Parkinson’s disease to be the result of the vitiated Vata. Which controls the overall level of balance and activation of the nervous system of humans. Pulse, tongue, nail, and eye examinations are the diagnosis methods used to reveal a person’s body constitution and to find out the imbalance. This helps the Ayurvedic physician to determine the line of treatment.

Ayurveda and Parkinson’s disease

Parkinson’s disease is termed “Kampa Vata” in Ayurveda. Ayurveda believes that the disturbance in Vata dosha is responsible for this disease. So Ayurvedic treatment of Parkinson’s disease is mainly on the line of removing the vitiation of the Vata dosha.

Causes

The deterioration of the nerve junctions called ganglia is the cause of Parkinson’s disease, which is located at the base of the brain. When they become affected, they start damaging the muscle control and thereby any movement.

Symptoms

Symptoms are not visible initially as they take a long time to show up as they usually develop over a long period of time.

  • Tremors can be noticed in a hand or limbs even at times of rest.
  • Posture is becomes stooped and stiff.
  • Tremors pro get worse with the passage of time and start affecting both sides of the body.
  • Stiffness and loss of balance in walking.
  • Difficulty in performing even simple routine tasks or sometimes impossible to perform.
  • The person feels depressed.

Ayurvedic Remedies

Ayurvedic medicines effectively slow down or stop the degeneration of the brain cells. These medications can be given for a longer duration without the fear of side effects. The patients show improvement in their condition and gain confidence to move around.

 Ayurveda treatment of Parkinson’s disease involves the use of an herb known as Kapi Kachhu, botanically known as ‘Mucuna Pruriens’. This herb contains dopamine in a natural form unlike the synthetic version prescribed in medical science. The powder of the herb is taken in the dose of ½ to 1 teaspoonful mixed in a cup of milk twice daily.

Suvarna Bhupati Rasa, Brihat Vata, Chintamani Rasa are other effective herbs used to treat this disease. In some cases, gold-based compounds are used.

Ayurvedic treatment also includes massage with medicated oils like Maha Mashadi Tailam.

Other Ayurvedic medicines used in treating Parkinson’s disease are Abhrak Bhasma, Agni Tundi Vati, Brihat Vat Chintamani, Maha Yograj Guggulu, Shrunga Bhasma, and Visha Tinduk Vati.

Dashmool (Ten Roots), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) and Sarpagandha (Rauwolfia serpentina) are some other herbs useful in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease.

Other Ayurvedic recommendations include full body massage with Maha Narayan oil (containing mainly Asparagus racemosus), “Anuvasan Basti” with Sahachar (Barleria prionitis) oil, and medicated enema called “Niruh Basti” with Dashmool oil.

Mild laxatives are prescribed for colon cleansing to combat vata aggravation.

Purification therapies known as Panchakarma are recommended to get rid of toxins from the body and to relax both body and mind.
