This Erectile Dysfunction (ED) term can be described as the inability to achieve or maintain an erection or the ability to achieve an erection for only a short duration. This condition is also referred to as ‘impotence’. The condition worsens with advancing age.
The affected person is unable to perform the sexual act in spite of having a strong desire and a cooperative partner. The person fails to get and retain erection and hardness of the penis that is required to perform the sexual act properly and so becomes tired resulting in perspiration plus frustration.

Causes of Erectile Dysfunction (ED)
Persons who have low levels of Shukra in the body may suffer erectile dysfunction. According to Susruta, the Ayurvedic scholar and pioneer of surgery, the element named ‘Shukra” present in the body is responsible for reproduction in men. Mainly Shukras are released through the process of ejaculation and generally, a healthy and happy union of body and mind leads to the proper functioning of the reproductive system.
Another factor contributing to the occurrence of erectile dysfunction is the low level of the hormone called testosterone. Typically after the age of 40, the level of testosterone begins to decrease.

Injury or any other disturbance to the normal body functions like nerve impulses of the brain, spinal column, muscles, tissues, arteries, and veins leading to the penis may cause erectile dysfunction.
Some diseases present in the body can also be a cause erectile dysfunction. Neurological diseases like Parkinson’s disease, hypothyroidism, anemia, arthritis, obesity, cancer, depression, diabetes, and endocrine disorders may cause degeneration of the cells and lead to erectile dysfunction.
Physical, as well as mental overexertion, can cause stress-related disorders like bad temper, poor quality of sleep, or lack of sleep leading to erectile dysfunction. Ayurveda points to grief fear and anxiety can cause impotence.
Trauma in the pelvic region and following surgeries for conditions of prostate, bladder, colon, etc may cause erectile dysfunction.
Ayurveda refers to trauma as “Abhighata” and “Shastradantanakhakshataha” for injury from weapons, teeth, nails, etc.
Past history of sexual abuse, excessive bicycle riding, and old age may also lead to erectile dysfunction.
