Ayurvedic Cure For Constipation

Constipation is a metabolic disorder characterized by the infrequently passing stools, inability to defecate completely in one instance, and ending up visiting the toilet too often.   It is accompanied by abdominal discomfort, straining, and incomplete evacuation.  Constipation is increasingly becoming the most common in modern times due to a fat and rich diet, stressful or sedentary lifestyle, and improper diet.

Ayurveda and Constipation

Constipation is known as Vibandh in Ayurveda.  Ayurveda attributes constipation to the collection of toxins known as ‘Ama’ in the digestive tract. The air present in the system namely Apan Vayu facilitates the passage of stool and urine. Obstruction in this process results in constipation.

The ayurvedic remedy is based on the theory that the three doshas in the body should be in the right balance to lead a healthy life. Disturbance in the dosha balance can cause diseases. According to Ayurveda constipation is caused by the aggravation of Vata dosha. Generally, people of the Vata constitution suffer from constipation.

Symptoms

The symptoms of constipation vary according to the dosha type of the person. There are three doshas namely vata, pitta and kapha and diseases can occur when one or a combination of these doshas do out of balance.

Vata dosha: The tongue may turn brownish that does not go away by cleaning. People of this type can feel uneasiness in the stomach and usually suffer from flatulence. Digestion of food takes a long time and they find it hard to eliminate the stools.

Pitta dosha: They pass yellowish stools and feel a burning sensation in the anus when passing stools.

Kapha dosha: They feel heaviness in the abdomen and are often lethargic. They also suffer from gas and pass stools almost white in color. The other distinct symptom is bad breath.

Causes 

  • Irregular dietary habits: Eating food at different times each day or not following a diet regimen disturbs the metabolic process and leads to constipation.
  • Eating unhealthy food that is hard to digest frequently puts stress on the digestive system
  • Poor nutrition or not consuming enough fibrous food which is necessary for regular bowel movements
  • Eating dry food
  • Not drinking a sufficient amount of water
  • Too much consumption of tea and coffee or cold drinks
  • Keeping awake late through the night causes an imbalance in the nervous system
  • Stress, mental tension affect the nervous system
  • Feelings like anger, guilt, or fear
  • Low level of immunity
  • Disturbance of the natural biological rhythm
  • Old age

Ayurvedic Treatment for Constipation

Ayurveda treatment involves loosening the impurities to move out of the system and activating the elimination process by softening the channels. The procedures involve cleansing processes, dietary adjustments, herbal medicines, Yoga, Pranayama, and Meditation. Body massage known as Abhyanga using medicated herbal oils is effective in cleansing and removing toxins from the body. The herbs can nourish and enhance the body’s natural healing ability and cures and prevents the disorder.

Aloe Vera Juice: It is a natural detoxifier, taken twice a day cleans the intestine, and removes impurities from the blood.

Triphala Choorna: This Ayurvedic herbal medicine is made up of three fruits namely, Amla (Indian gooseberry), Bibhitaki, and Haritika It works as an excellent cleanser as well as a rejuvenator.

  • Take vata pacifying foods
  • Including spices that enhance digestion and proper use of herbs in cooking
  • Adoption of a balanced diet
  • Consume adequate amounts of ghee and oil
  • The correct combination of foods
  • Reducing stress through yoga, breathing exercises, and meditation
  • Balance in eating, sleeping, and exercising.
