Ayurveda For Irregular Periods Menstrual Cycle

Irregular periods are a commonly found condition in women in the reproductive age group. When females reach the age of about 12 years their ovaries start producing large quantities of estrogen. The commencement of menstruation signifies the beginning of their reproductive phase. The normal menstrual flow lasts for about 3-5 days known as periods and the normal menstrual cycle happens every 20 to 32 days.

Some women suffer from irregular periods in different forms such as bleeding during days other than the regular cycle; these periods are heavier or longer than the normal; in some others, there is the absence of periods or the time between two periods is longer or shorter than the normal. Irregular periods generally happen at both ends of the menstrual life of a woman.

If allowed to advance by leaving it unattended irregular periods may cause diseases like polycystic ovary syndrome that interferes with ovulation. Symptoms include excessive hair growths, acne, infertility, dandruff, high blood pressure and weight gain. Acute cases may lead to major diseases such as heart diseases, endometriosis, or ovarian cancer. 

Ayurveda approach to Irregular periods

In Ayurveda the condition is known as Vishama Rajahpravritti. Irregular periods in women are characterized by headaches and abdominal pain. There may be pain in the back or around the pelvic region. This can cause mood changes in women.

Symptoms For Irregular Periods

There menstrual flow may be profuse or scanty. The time between two menstrual periods may be longer or shorter. Sometimes a white discharge may accompany the menstrual fluid. Anorexia, insomnia or lack of interest, hot flushes are some other symptoms seen in women suffering from irregular periods.

Causes For Irregular Periods

Hormone imbalance can cause irregular periods more often. This can occur as a result of weight loss or gain, certain illnesses, and some medications.

  • Stress is a major cause
  • Young girls at the onset of the periods may have irregular periods. Their cycle can take months or years to establish regularity.
  • Dietary problems such as anorexia, bulimia, or poor nutrition
  • Too much exercise
  • Thoughts and emotions
  • Anxiety about pregnancy
  • Certain drugs –  both prescription and recreational
  • Disruption in routine
  • Sexual activity – any new occurrence
  • Illness like thyroid conditions or psychological imbalance 

Ginger For irregular Periods

Ginger is a highly effective home remedy for menstrual disorders. A piece of fresh ginger should be ground and boiled in a cup of water for a few minutes. This infusion can be sweetened with sugar and taken thrice daily after meals.

Sesame Seeds For Irregular periods Menstrual Cycle

Sesame seeds help in alleviating menstrual problems. Half a teaspoon of sesame seed powder is taken with hot water twice a day, which acts well in reducing spasmodic pain during menstruation in young, unmarried anemic girls.  

Coriander Seeds For Irregular periods Menstrual Cycle

Boil 1 teaspoonful of coriander (dhania) seeds in 2 cups of water till it is reduced to 1 cup. Add sugar to taste and drink. Repeat 2 or 3 times a day. In the treatment of excessive menstruation, 6 grams of coriander seeds should be boiled in half a liter of water and the decoction should be taken with sugar candy.  

Ashoka For Irregular periods Menstrual Cycle

The bark of the Ashoka tree is an effective remedy for excessive blood loss during the monthly period. The decoction of this herb is helpful in treating menstrual problems. Other useful herbs are Chandan, Kamal Phool, and Lodhra.

Diet For Irregular periods Menstrual Cycle

All-fruit fasts for two or three consecutive days can be effective and should be observed at monthly intervals depending on the need. Avoid white flour, tinned and preserved items, strong spices and condiments, and strong coffee and tea. 

Yoga For Irregular periods Menstrual Cycle

Ardha chakrasana, Bhujangasana, and Sarvang Asana are beneficial in relieving menstrual disorders.
