Ayurveda For Fat Loss

Extra fat in the body causes obesity and leads to many different disorders depending upon the person’s body constitution known as Prakruti.   When excessive fat deposits are present in the adipose tissue the body becomes overweight and this condition is known as obesity.   The accumulation of fat in excess puts overstrain on the heart, liver, kidneys and bone joints and results in diseases related to the affected area. The common illnesses due to obesity are high arthritis, high blood pressure, diabetes, coronary thrombosis, gout, and gall bladder disorders.

Ayurveda is increasingly becoming popular as a natural weight loss program that is highly effective. From the Ayurvedic perception, obesity is the main factor that gives way to several diseases due to the strain it puts on the organs. Ayurveda system approaches any disorder in the body from the physical, mental and spiritual aspect of life as the health of a person depends upon the balance of the internal elements present in the body to those in the universe. Disturbance of the balance and the body constitution known as dosha makes the body disease-prone.

The Ayurvedic fat loss program is based on the person’s physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual characteristics and requirements. The program consists of a diet regimen, exercise such as yoga postures, and meditation to bring back the physical and emotional balance to normal. Thus the normal functioning of the metabolic and excretory systems is achieved along with a clear and calm mind.

Ayurveda considers that the Kapha dosha causes the accumulation of excess fat in the body. Reducing Kapha in the body helps in burning excess fat.  Ayurveda recommends a diet regimen and lifestyle to reduce the effect of Kapha. Overeating, irregular eating habits, and intake of incompatible foods at the same time may cause obesity.   Ayurveda recommends controlling the eating habits and regular exercise and adopting a preventive lifestyle to avoid the factors causing weight gain.

Ayurvedic Medicine for Fat Loss

The gum made from Commiphora Mukul also known as ‘Guggulu’ is a highly effective drug for fat loss.

Ayurveda Recommends the following diet composition for fat loss

  • 30-40% of your diet should contain whole grains.
  • 20-30% should be made up of protein from vegetarian and non-vegetarian food
  • 40-50% should comprise of vegetables and fruits.

Ayurvedic Home Remedies and Lifestyle recommendations 

  • Reduce intake of rice and potato as they contain carbohydrates that promote fat deposits.
  • Include fruits and vegetables and low-calorie foods.
  • Green gram and horse gram help in reducing Kapha and medha.
  • Avoid food and beverages which increase kapha and medha such as sweets, sweetened drinks, and oily food.
  • Dairy products like cheese, butter, and non-vegetarian foods should be minimized as they are rich in fat.
  • Increase intake of beans, salads, dry cereals, and cooked whole grains in the diet.  Foods with Vata and Pitta qualities will help to increase those doshas in the body and will prevent an increase in kapha.
  • Mint helps to reduce weight. Tea made of Mint tea is also effective.
  • Reduce intake of too much salt as it increases body weight.
  • Include spices like dry ginger, cinnamon, black pepper, etc. in the diet as they are helpful in fat loss.
  • Bitter gourd and bitter variety of drumstick promote fat loss.
  • Carrot juice is helpful in weight loss.
  • Honey is an excellent home remedy as it converts extra fat in the body into energy consumed for normal functions. Fasting on honey and lime- juice with warm water is beneficial without the loss of energy or appetite.
  • Exercises like brisk walking, jogging, and playing outdoor games help in weight loss.
  • Restrict sleeping hours.
