Abnormal Menstrual Bleeding

Generally, a normal menstrual period lasts for about three to five days, which tends to cause a lot of discomfort to women. During this phase, one loses around forty milliliters of blood. But when abnormal menstrual bleeding occurs, one can lose up to eighty milliliters of blood and it can last for a period of one week. Abnormal menstrual bleeding is generally known as Menorrhagia. This condition is marked by symptoms such as pain in the lower abdomen, abnormal blood clots, excessive bleeding, irregular cycles, etc. At times these symptoms can get quite extreme and one might find it difficult to carry on with their daily activities. Basically, the diagnosis of abnormal menstrual bleeding is done on the basis of the symptoms experienced by the patient. Tests such as pelvic scan, Pap smear, ultrasound, etc can be conducted by the doctor in order to decipher the severity of the condition. Abnormal menstrual bleeding can develop due to various factors such as the presence of fibroids, diabetes, hormonal imbalance, etc. At times fluctuations in weight and stress can also lead to abnormal menstrual bleeding.

Medications such as birth control pills can sometimes lead to abnormal menstrual bleeding. Infections in areas like the vagina, ovaries, and fallopian tubes can increase the chances of abnormal bleeding. Infection in these areas is generally caused by pelvic inflammatory diseases. For women who are more than forty years of age can experience abnormal menstrual bleeding as a symptom of perimenopause. If one has not experienced a menstrual period for a span of one year, then they are bound to experience abnormal bleeding and in such cases, a doctor should be consulted. Ectopic pregnancy at times might result in the development of abnormal menstrual bleeding. When there are changes in the type or amount of birth control pills that are consumed then heavy bleeding might take place as the estrogen level fluctuates because of the changes.

Generally, iron supplements are prescribed by the doctor to treat this condition especially for those women who suffer from anemia or iron deficiency.
